Burke Animal Clinic is a Local Blood Donation Center for the Blue Ridge Veterinary Blood Bank
Could your dog become a life saver?A small donation of blood means giving the gift of life to an animal that is sick or injured. The demand for blood products continues to increase and local veterinary blood banks need the help of canine volunteers.
Blue Ridge Veterinary Blood Bank is the largest all-volunteer donor veterinary blood bank. They have blood donor sites all over Virginia and Maryland, and Burke Animal Clinic is proud to be one of their donation sites. On May 1, 2012, Burke Animal Clinic held its first canine blood drive. This was not a single event, but rather the first of an ongoing partnership. The clinic provides space for the blood bank staff to come in and accept blood donations from local dogs. The blood bank makes their own donor appointments and provides their own staff and supplies for the collection service.
Donor dogs must be:
Healthy and happy
Greater than 35 lbs.
Between 9 months and 8 years of age
Able to lay still for about 10 minutes…with a little help
